Spelling
By Helen

Clip to ScrapBook
Just don't get carried away, I once taught beside a teacher who gave 25 words per week. That is tooooooooo many for a first grader. I use 5 with sometimes 10 but 1/2 are review words or very simple word family words. Our
five first grade teachers give spelling test and we choose the words each week from the skills we are teaching and a basic 100 sight word list. All week we do boardwork or homework with those words. We write sentences, put them in ABC order, write the consonants in blue and the vowels in red, have letters to form the basic five words cut into snack bags for each child to practice making
the word.......See Cunningham Four Block materials for many ideas. We also cheer, sing, and stomp the words daily. You could have the students trace them on a partners back etc. YES, FIRST GRADERS NEED TO SPELL BASIC WORDS CORRECTLY.
