It certainly isn't unusual for first graders to take spelling tests. We give them in our classroom. Though, we sometimes wait a few weeks before starting because just the word "test" frightens some students. You're probably wise to wait a little bit before introducing this to your group. But I agree with you that it is a valuable teaching and assessment tool and you shouldn't run into too much resistence, even if the teacher next door isn't doing it.
