Wriiting Fair
By rth

Clip to ScrapBook
I have not participated in a writing fair before, but most learning fairs work better when the activities are short and focused.

Things that might be fun:

Different kinds of writing materials & themed areas:
>In
the castle corner, put on a crown and write about a decree (order) that you would give if you were king or queen. The students could use fancy pens and write on "gold" (certificate type) paper.

>Use die cuts to punch out lots of large construction paper letters. Student could use the letters to spell their names, glue them on a large sheet of paper & then write a sentence about themselves

on each letter that begins with that letter.

>DON'T MISS THE MESSAGE! Have an area with a chalkboard, paint brushes and water. Student write messages with the paintbrushes. When the words evaporate, another students writes a new message.

>Graffiti Wall -Cover a wall with bulletin board paper and provide markers for students to write questions and/or messages.

>Magnetic Words - Use a large magnetic board and provide lots of magnetic word tiles. Students can make poems or write sentences.

>Provide disguises for students. Funny glasses, crazy hats, etc. Take Polaroid photos of students in costume. Students then write about about the photos. (Use throw away shower caps inside hats to assure cleanliness & prevent lice.)

>Create a giant newspaper: Use a huge sheet of bulleting board paper (maybe 3 x 6 feet) to create the front page of the newspaper. Put a masthead at the top with your school's name on it (The South Hills Review)
Make 10 or 15 columns on the paper. Have small sheets of paper available (the width of the colums) for students to write articles for the paper. As they write articles, glue them on the front page until you have filled the paper.

>Have example of pattern books that students can use as models for their own stories: Simple books like Brown Bear, Brown Bear could be adapted for many ages, by suggesting themes such as N'Sync, N'Sync who did you see? I saw Brittny Spears singing with me!

Grab Bag - Students reach into a noun bag, an adjective bag & a verb bag to get a word. They use the three words to write an interesting topic sentence for a paragraph. If they write the paragraphs on chart paper with markers, they can be displayed as they are completed.

As I'm writing these ideas, I'm thinking this might be fun to try. Please keep us posted on what you finally decide for the event.
