soil samples
By Molly

Clip to ScrapBook
Debbie,
I don't want to question your project, but I do have a question for you. Do you realize top soil is top soil no matter where you would get it from. The soil people would be able to dig up in the winter would
problably be very similar. So much so, it would be difficult to compare.

My father drills water wells. I had him take a soil sample from the different layers of dirt as he drilled a well and put each idto a zip lock baggie. The students were able to REALLY see as well as feel the difference between the layers of soil in the earth. In New Mexico, some wells can be 500 or so feet

deep. There were around 12 different type of soils I believe.
If you could find a person who drills wells in your area, maybe you could ask him to get you a sample of each layer. I now live in New York. My well is only 130 feet deep. So there would not be as many samples. If you live in a very dry area, you could get lucky and get many different types.
The GOOD NEWS is that dirt keeps. You'd have it forever. However, the clay type of soils do tend to dry out a bit.
GOod luck.
