Bored kindergarteners
By Jackie

Clip to ScrapBook
This is such a shame! K-kids have so much natural enthusiasm and curiosity, it's a pity to take it away little by little!

While kindergarten children do need some routine and structure in their learning, they also need
variety in activities to keep up their interest and excitement. There are so many other things the children can do that would teach them the letter/sound correspondence and much more! Shared reading, interactive charts, morning messages, phonemic awareness activities (like games, rhyming, blending and lots of other oral language activities), writing and singing are all appropriate.
Rather than having children do worksheets, they can practice skills by manipulating letter tiles, magnetic letters, sandpaper letters, miniature objects, puzzles, etc.

I'm not sure how you should handle this situation. Some things to consider: Is the teacher new/inexperienced and unsure of herself or, on the other hand, very experienced and perhaps set in her ways? Is it possible she is following the prescribed curriculum? In which case, your concerns rest with the school/disctrict rather than the individual teacher. Are you comfortable approaching her with your observations/concerns? Good luck to you and please let me know if I can be of anymore help.
