Reading

Hi Trish,
There are lots of great professional books on researched practices for the teaching of reading. If you visit Heinemann or Stenhouse publishers, you'll find something to meet your needs. Stenhouse even publishes
many of their books in read only format on the net.
Regarding your question on themes, I gather literature converstation books for many different reasons, genre is one-we're reading some books in fantasy and fairy tales, folk tales, myths all fall in this category.
The last collection I put together was more tailored to the AZ standards in SS, so we read several about Native
Americans of the region both fiction and non-fiction, as well as water (or lack thereof in the desert), plus a few twists on familiar fairy tales, legends, etc.
During reader's workshop, the kids are also free to browse the shelves for books to read alone or discuss with a friend. When the new book orders arrive, I share them with the children before these are shelved then put them in a special basket for reading. A few copies of a scary stories book came recently. Within the hour, there were five children sitting together in a circle on the floor, sharing their reactions to different stories with one another. It will be interesting to see what others do during their Language Arts Block. Best of luck, whatever you decide. ;-D
