crystal snowflakes By Julianne

Michelle, You can make them with either salt or sugar. The salt crystals are easier. I have my students twine together three lengths of pipe cleaner to make the six legs. Now stick the whole thing into the very, very salty| water and let it slowly evaporate. You can use very, very sugary water, but it's messier, you should boil the water to supersaturate it with sugar, and it has a nasty tendency to mold. Of course, the kids can eat them later... You can use chopsticks or toothpicks tied together at the center for the legs of the snowflake and get the same effect. This works better with the sugar | | crystals if you want to eat them.Whatever route you go, try it at home first to be sure it works for you. If you have difficulty, e-mail me and we'll see if we can figure out what might have gone wrong!
