alternate activity
By SJ

Clip to ScrapBook
This is a sticky situation, but you are dealing with it in a positive manner. Hang in there.

The child could complete an independent study call it "Inside the Earth." The student would independently create a KWL on the
alternative topic. The student would research geological facts, the various layers of the earth, create a model of the earth, watch videos (the Magic School Bus Inside the Earth), and finally present the information to other classmates.

Another idea, if the parents are unhappy with alternative or independent topics, you could talk to the other teachers in you grade level to see what

they are teaching during your unit. Explain to the parents that the teachers are teaching units on bugs, penguins, and plants (for example). The parents would then select the topic they want their child to learn about. Explain to them that during the volcano unit their child will go study with another class until the volcano unit is over (with their permission and the principal's permission of course!).

Good luck!
