I would talk with your Principal as well about this. Is this parent new to your school, has the parent made demands before. I guess I'm curious as I have not heard of anyone having problems with
Your Principal can let you know how far you can stretch things. Having the student do a separate research project during this time, etc., or whether he will want to call in the parents and discuss things with them. A lot will depend on how willing these parents are to make compromises and also to help come up with a solution. On a personal note... while I never have problems modifying something, I do have limits. I will not plan a major unit for just one student, nor will I cancel a major unit for just one student. You want to tread carefully or volcanoes may end up being only one of many requests for change. And if it is an alternative topic - perhaps one of the parents could come in during that time to work with their child on the project.
