So sorry you felt I was negative, but it is my opinion. I'll restate in hopefully more positive tones...I did not mean that you nor anyone else uses AR or AM as the sole reading or mathematics curriculum. And
yes, children do need computation to solve problems, but not necessarily the 'adult' conventional algorythm. We too give them the morning as a Math/Science block so the children have the time they need to construct their own understandings as mathematicians. However, the costs for AR and AM could be used to support teachers in facilitating excellent mathematics learning in their classrooms.
If the funding used to buy the AR and AM programs was redirected, staff development could be a powerful ongoing model so everyone could grow in their confidence and abilities as teachers. ;-D Take care!
