would this help?

Laura,

It can be challenging working with all four at the same time, but it can also be very rewarding for you and the students. Plus, the "bonding" and relationships you can create. I have seen a lot of suggestions where
you have the ESL student draw pictures of their comprehension of their story. Then you could model how you would label or write one sentence to tell what it is about. Next time around, see if one of your other students in the group could help label it. Then have the ESL student copy the writing and repeat the words. We use a lot of sticky notes in my classroom to have students take
notes and place in their books. They may write a connection they have to their story, a vocabulary word they don't know, a question they may have. Just a word or two to help them remember what they have to say in discussion. Also, before reading a selection it may help to really introduce the story, make your own connections, ask if they have any connections they could make, discuss any words, write them out in syllables or chunks to help them "see" the sounds. You say it normally, then say it in syllables, then have them repeat it in syllables, then normally. We have had a lot of success with that, so that students don't come to the word and lose all focus. Good luck!
