coloring By KT

I have taught primary grades for many years and it seems there is always a child or two who do not like to color. A few things, quite by accident, have seemed to encourage them. If I catch them coloring something I will try| to compliment them on their efforts. Also, when I read aloud to the whole class we discuss illustrations and how they add to the story. I try to point out several examples: full page color, bold colors, soft colors, partially colored areas, collages, and pen/ink with no color, but LOTS of detail. Some students can be encouraged to try one of these styles. Often times they will be willing | | to add more color...just not into coloring the whole page. I have found, that if I insist, I do not get the quality I desire. So I have learned to give them choices and it becomes a win/win situation. But there are times that we all practice a certain style and they need to go along with it. Learning from other illustrators and experimenting with styles seems to be worthwhile.
