A great word to illustrate the schwa sound and compare it to the short vowel /a/ is Alaska, with schwa at beginning and end ,short /a/ in the middle. Good luck!
P.S. I have Wilson certification-this is very detailed in explanation of schwa if you have anyone on your staff with this, or ask your Speech?language person for any hints- they have a treamendous amount of knowledge in phomemic awareness issues and teaching skills.
