Depends on the child and....
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
It depends on the child and also on the program. Most children benefit from being home an extra year and entering kindergarten a bit older. However there are some who are ready at age 5 and excel throughout their school
years. Maturity is often an issue with younger students rather than academics. I have had younger children who are academically ready for grade 1 but not emotionally and so they struggle with working in group settings, etc.,
As far as bossiness - sometimes age is a factor - but I believe more often it is just that child's personality. I've had "older" children in my class who are
also the most shy and reserved students. And with the help of both the parents and the teacher students who are "bossy" can learn to be less bossy and to get along with their friends.
However if a child is just too young and struggles academically as well as socially it makes the beginning of their "school career" a rough start.
Personally I think you should give your youngest a bit more time at home. If she is very bright and you worry about her being bored in K you can always do extra things with her at home or just put her in a half day program and then find another program that is more intensive for the other half of the day.
