recess

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree that most kids need to be taught the correct rules for basic games like 4 square and tetherball. We can't assume they know them. We have a PE teacher that makes this part of the beginning year routine. I find as a
classroom teacher that I need to reteach them during the year when I see kids wandering and not actively participating. They need to build their confidence to play in a crowd by playing in the safety of their own classmates until they learn the basics. They also need to be encouraged to give it a try at recess. Parent helpers there to add supervision or oversee a game would be really helpful.
I find I need to remind kids to play by "school rules" once they have been taught. Kids tend to make up their own rules as they go along and this is where lots of the arguments begin.
