fair and equal

I am a special ed. teacher, and I have to say the one thing that has always stuck with me since I first heard it during my sophomore year, is the fact that "the word FAIR does NOT necessarily mean the same as EQUAL." I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this statement and the philosophy behind it have hugely shaped my personal perspective and attitudes toward teaching.
