unmotivated student help
By mary

Clip to ScrapBook
This year I have been blessed with a Senior citizen volunteer (who used to be a teacher!!!, though any caring adult would be great, I'm sure. She came to the school through an organization - I think "Senior Corps"(?)- I'm
not 100% but can ask her next week. She comes three days a week during reading time and spends it primarily with one student who sounds very much like your student. She reads with him and often does his larger projects(book report presentation projects etc..) in class with so he can learn how to do these projects successfully and fit in socially by being prepared and looking as smart
and wonderful as he really is,in front of his peers. You may want to contact your local Council on Aging or Senior Center or church to seek out volunteers.
My volunteer is so wonderful and has truly made a difference in this boy's life- he cares for her and is so excited when she comes.Of course, she is so happy to be making a difference, too! Somehow, the other kids don't seem to mind, as this is done while I am seing reading groups and everyone is engaged in those groups or other independent activities. (The "three-ring circus" time of day to meet everyone's needs ***Be sure that you have a CORI check etc.. as would be the policy of your school before bringing in any outside help(I,m sure you know this, but it's better to be safe..)
Good luck! Even if you do not have the fortune to find someone this year, search for next year as there are bound to be children who will benefit every year.
