Parental Involvement
By Susan/IN

Clip to ScrapBook
We just had a very successful Family Literacy Fair this week. I have organized it for two years (this is my second year in this particular school; I had written a grant, then our PTO funded it for 3 years at my previous
school and so when I came to this school my principal was pleased that I wanted to get the same thing going here). Our PTO funded it. We had between 80 and 90 students attend with their parents. We also invited students who will be attending our school next year due to redistricting. I have presented on this topic twice this year at two regional IRA conferences. Everyone, from the teachers
involved to the parents to the children all seem to enjoy the evening. We plan a variety of activities that a teacher mans. We give away door prizes and goody bags to the kids, plus this year I made up a booklet that detailed each activity for the parents. We also invited our local public library to have an informational table. They are always delighted to come. You can e-mail me directly if you would like more specific information. I don't know where you are but if you are faily close to me I am doing some inservices on this topic if your school is interested.

Hope this helps.
Susan
