That depends...in our school, all teachers and teacher assistants are invited to retirement banquets. The teacher's union and the TA's union each give a collective gift and everyone gets together for a lovely evening out
of socializing and relaxing. You may not know this person well, but if it isn't too costly and a group of you and your colleagues want to attend, then I say go. I'm sure your presence will be noted and appreciated more than you realize. A retirement party is a significant event in one person's life, and it would be wonderful for this teacher to look back and see how many people were there
to wish her well on the next phase of her life. So if you are on friendly terms and it isn't too expensive, consider joining your friends in a nice evening out.
