sick
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I got sick a lot when I first started teaching. I seemed to get everything the kids did. I make sure that my students wash their hands whenever they go to the restroom and before and after lunch. We also use the antibacterial
hand gel, which I believe helps, too.

Whenever you start to feel sick, why not try Echinacea? I am not sure it really works--it's supposed to--but I take this at the first sign of feeling sick. It's a natural remedy found in the vitamin/health stores.

If you teach young children, provide mini-lessons on preventing germ spreading. Cover mouth with hands when coughing or

sneezing. Use a tissue and throw it away. Wash hands right after coughing or sneezing. Send children who are obviously going to be serious germ spreaders to the office. (Some parents actually do send their sick kids to school without qualm. I guess they don't want to deal with it. I suppose they also feel that the school will babysit their sick child while they are at work.) It may not help, but write a note at the beginning of the year to urge your parents to keep their children at home. Write a list of items which should keep the child at home: fever within 24 hours, for example.

Good luck, and gesuntheit!
