I tell the kids that the most important that makes persuasive writing different from narrative writing is that you have to "sell" the topic to your reader. I think it is important to tell them what they are doing in simple terms. Here are some topics I have used:
Write a persuasive response giving reasons you should be able to have recess all day.
...why you should get a new toy/video game
...why you should be the star of your own T.V. show
...why we should only go to school one day a week Hope this helps
