What's your opinion of principals who call parents on the weekend? By A parent and teacher

We have a principal who calls parents on the weekends - usually about a student's behavior or why they didn't show up for conferences! She'll be making several of those "Where were you at conference?" calls this weekend.| She doesn't live in this community - it's long distance for her to make these calls. During one conference with parents last week, the father informed me that he wasn't very happy about getting a phone call from the principal on Saturday night at 8:00. He said his attitude about the call turned very negative when he found out it wasn't about something positive about his son, but it | | was about something negative about his son - it was about his son's playground behavior. He felt my note that I sent home Wednesday afternoon about his son's rough behavior on the playground that day was sufficent, and her "official" school district letter that was mailed was enough. (I was not aware of this "official" letter nor the phone call she made Saturday night) The associate who supervises the playground shared this one incident of poor behavior with the principal and with me, the classroom teacher. The boy had not behaved this way prior and I was kind surprised he choose to behave this way that day. The principal's phone call to the father on Saturday night was her "follow up" to check about the letter sent home about his behavior choices on the playground. I do call parents at home. I do the calling during the week days - school days - to discuss "school business." I believe, like the father shared, that the weekends should be off limits to calling parents and verse versa. And if I do bother any parents on the weekend, I would make sure it is good news or very friendly social chit-chat. I would not discuss "school business" at that time. Living in this small town community, the parents, too, are my friends and neighbors.
