I have a similar student in my 2nd grade classroom. This girl has trouble producing anything that is open-ended, such as a creative writing assignment. She has more success with fill in the blanks and cloze activities.

My suggestion to you is to have this child tested by a psychologist--if your school does not have one, the district does, or, if not, should pay for the testing. In my student's case, it was discovered that she has poor small motor skills and there are neurodevelopmental problems. She is learning things, but cannot physically do the work.

You may also want to consider asking your student to only complete a few questions/problems in order to determine that he IS learning the objective.

Consult with the parents, your principal, and the school psychologist before pursuing testing. But DO pursue it. Good luck
