I think you should tell them only as much as you feel comfortable telling them. And, if you tell the kids you are having surgery that may lead to you being asked alot of questions you don't want to answer or will have a difficult time answering.
You are able to keep your personal life personal, so I would just tell the kids that you will be away for a while, but you'll be back before you know it. Then, maybe you can quickly change the subject to whomever will be taking your place.
