I agree! By Elaine

Emma,I agree with you about the ability grouping thing. There should be lots of research available to support you in your beliefs not to "sort" kids in elementary school. If you are truly the odd ball in your group (of | how many teachers?) then I am afraid the chances of swaying the others over to your way of thinking is slim. We don't actually ability group at our school, but they (I say "they" because I am so against this concept) scoop the cream off the crop of our 4th and 5th grade math students and put them into 4th and 5th grade "accelerated" math classes. In the place of these higher students | | they take from us, we get back lower ones. It's great for the accelerated math teachers, but it's not what's good for students and that's according to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics research. I'm sorry I can't offer you an answer to your problem. I just wanted you to know someone out here agrees with you and sympathizes with your problem. Good luck. Elaine
