Reading programs

Hi Jennifer,
Doesn't sound like you have much of a choice IF your administrator expects you to follow the adopted curriculum materials. Open Court places definite emphasis on the Visual or Graphophonic cueing system with its 'decodable' readers...not much in the way of meaning there! (Meaning is usually a strength for most children.)
You could always argue that you are teaching children, not materials and will let your assessment scores 'speak' for themselves. If you're fortunate, you'll get an administrator who trusts your judgement and will allow you the flexibility to do what you feel is best for children. Best of luck!!! ;-D
