Open Court
By GradeOne Teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm another teacher who uses Open Court in grade one. I find it an excellent program. My students have really enjoyed it and are quite successful. The rate they have learned is amazing. It's not worksheet oriented. I
find I spend most of my time doing oral work with them (blending etc.) The worksheets and workbooks help focus on the concepts taught during the lesson and the kids love to do them.

Open court allows for a period called Writer's workshop. I find I tend to deviate from what they outline. This is where I do my own writing activities with students. That part of Open Court is actually

set up to allow for teacher individuality. It doesn't say "do this, and then do this". It gives many useful suggestions as to how you may want to use your time during writer's workshop.

The only pain in the butt with the program is making all the damn mini- and practice- books. They work like a charm, but a pain to put together. That's what parent helpers are for though.
