placement for teachers.

Ingrid:
I know how you feel because I was in the same position out of college looking for a teaching job. One thing I did was do a year long teaching internship at a private school in Boston - it was a huge resume booster,
although the money was not great it included room and board. Another idea to contemplate, if you are interested, is private school teaching. Private schools generally do not require certification, simply ask that if hired you get certification within a time frame. Alot of people have a misconception about private schools (I attended one as well as taught in them), they are great institutions
with really great kids and faculty. There are both boarding and day schools, so not all will require the dreaded extra 'dorm duty'. Generally it's a smaller class size and much more freedom for teachers in the classroom. There is a free placement firm: Carney Sandoe Associates who do teacher placements (free of charge to teachers) across the US. That is how I got a permanent job in NC teaching science. Of course they may not be able to find anything in the NYC area, but you never know. It is a great way to get started, get your certification, and then return to the public school arena. Good luck, and stick to it - the world needs good teachers! - Abi
