I also student taught in the 1st grade, and I made 3 book bags. The book bags that I know of are actually a link between school and home. I made a book bag from a regular canvas bag that I painted/decorated. Then, I included a book, depending on the subject. For example, I made science, math and language arts book bags. Each bag contained the book, a student journal, a parent journal (the home-school connection!) and 2 activities for the students to do with their parents. Hope this helped.
