Death
By Mary

Clip to ScrapBook
When a grandparent, parent, or sibling die, I always buy a book for our school's library. I ask the family what kinds of interests that person had, and then try to find a picture book about that subject. I have the librarian
put a book plate inside the book saying "In Memory of.......
The family really likes this, and I make sure my student gets to be the first person to check out the book. I have had a three parents die in the past ten years. I always urge my students and their parents to attend the service. It means a great deal to the child. One little girl I had a number of years ago could tell you
every classmate who attended the funeral. It is also much easier for the children in my class to welcome back the child because they have attended the funeral. I recommend the book "What is Heaven?" by Maria Shriver. I just read it to my class when one of my student's grandfather died. There was much very good discussion about death. I also love Cynthia Rylant's books...Cat Heaven and Dog Heaven. Those are wonderful books to read to kids when their pets die.
