I teach 2nd as well and have read the 1st book to my class for the last three years. It is a little slow at first and as soon as the letters start arriving they are hooked! In fact the last part of the book this year I
read for an hour and a half straight through, every time I tried to stop they begged to keep going (the loudest was the one I thought wasn't listening!) I let the children follow along in their own copy if they have one- at our school we have some protective parents but only one student in another room was not allowed to hear them. I would explain some of it as you go along, it has some

good vs. evil themes and a bully, the whole nine yards! I have seen this book hook kids into reading many times and for that reason alone it is worth reading.
