This is my second year with a multiage (1,2,3) classroom. I have independent language arts centers for the first 90 minutes of school. This is where I am pulling reading groups and the rest of the class is working on centers.| I have already taught the centers and they are mostly just at independent practice. They have a checklist to mark off their tasks for the week. I have three groups for math. I never teach math whole-class. The three groups rotate to where they are with me for a lesson every third day. The other two days they are practicing a concept that I have taught, playing math games with |
| other students or on the computer. I am very explicit as to what they can or cannot do during the two days they are not with me. If I am lucky enough to have a mom or dad come in and help, I have them work with one group that is working independently and have them reinforce a particular concept that needs attention such as elapsed time, money or problem-solving. The rest of my day is whole-class. Silent reading, read alouds, writing and theme-work are much easier to do whole class. I usually teach with a mini-lesson before I send the students off to write. We have a large carpet-area that we gather at before each segment of the day. I hope this helps a little. The worst part of a multiage classroom is that I have three different math texts and three different social studies texts. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any more questions.
