cooperative groups

Emily -
Could you have each group doing a seperate assignment...for instance, let's pretend you have 6 groups.

Group 1 - vocabulary - have them look up 10 words or so in the dictionary that they list (as they read)
and don't know what the words mean.
Group 2 - illustrate your favorite part of what you read
Group 3 - Write a letter to one of the characters in your story
Group 4 - discuss your reading in your small group (quietly)
Group 5 - (another seat activity) - book review/journal of story thoughts, etc.
Group 6 - reading next 10 pages of reading piece

Then, have each group rotate...so

that there will only be one group discussing...this should make it easier on you (I don't know how you keep your sanity with 34 kids! ) with the noise level...and then you could concentrate on other reading/comprehension aspects of the pieces they are reading. Maybe each group would work on their information/assignment for 10-15 minutes. You could split up the literature circles to last a few days during your reading time, and this might make it quieter.
Hope this makes sense...if not, let me know....I'll try to write it more clearly.
Good Luck!
