questions on grades
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm not sure how all school districts work, but generally...

- most teachers choose a grade because they have worked with or student taught with the grade before and have enjoyed that age level. Some have volunteered in
the past, have children of their own, teach Sunday School so because of their experiences know they prefer certain ages of children to work with.

- teachers who choose jr or sr high often choose those grades because of the subject they prefer teaching. They want to be a math teacher or a science teacher. Since most elementary teachers teach all subject areas, those who want to specialize

in a subject area move upwards to the older grades.

- not everyone gets to work in the grade they chose - you may apply for one job and get offered another. I wanted to teach in grades 3 or 4 when I first started out, but ended up in kindergarten and then grade 1. I love my little ones, but sometimes I do think about changing grades to enjoy those older students as well. I love reading and writing with grades 3 and 4.

So sometimes the decision is out of our hands.

Now my degree is for elementary education, but I am certified from grades K to 12. If I chose to change grades from grade 1, I could get a job in any of the elementary grades. Some Principals would be cautious if I wanted to move from grade 1 to grades 5 or 6, but depending on my background they might give me a chance on those grades. (Only because it's such a big jump from grade 1 to 6 with not only curriculum changes, but classroom management, etc.,) It would be difficult for me in most school districts to move into jr/sr high without going back to school and doing more coursework on a specific subject area.

However in smaller more isolated school districts one can often change positions to almost any teaching position because there are teacher shortages in those areas. In my area most of our special education teachers were regular classroom teachers who wanted a new challenge. They were trained on the job for their new position in special education. And just last year our reading recovery teacher in our class who was working primarily with grades K to 2, moved up to the High School to work with Junior High students.
