Survival Guide
By Jerry

Clip to ScrapBook
That sounds like a great idea! (Leave a copy handy for us Subs.) I just started Substituting this year, though I did teach for a while about 30 years ago. My first call was for 6th grade when a teacher unexpectedly did
not come back in the fall, so they were still interviewing for a permanent teacher. It was pretty much chaos. But thinking back, I really felt sorry for those kids, coming from a 5th grade "womb" with the same room, same teacher, smaller school, etc. Then to throw a Sub on them had to have been the cherry on the top. I take that back, the cherry would have been when I got sick and they
had to get a Sub for the Sub! A survival guide would have been a life saver. ps: I was called back several times to Sub for those students, and most of them remembered me (in a positive light) which I thought was a small victory in a large battle. So in your Survival Guide, how about a couple of lines for a Substitute Teacher, maybe about some of the things you do as a matter of routine (restroom breaks, eating candy in class, etc.) You know that they will ALWAYS say "But our Teacher lets us do it!"
