Your story as well as Carol's double trouble-sub. in the library post really make me wonder how much of the mis-behavior of kids in school is a product of bad behavior by the so-called professionals. What a shame.
When I first sub'd for Kdg. I did get bailed out by another teacher but he also had a significant role with the kids with 6 or so starting their day with him, then his team-teaching math later in the day in the Kdg. room. He did not yell but did the routine to get attention, then talked to the kids about treating me the same as teacher. He modeled the steps for getting their attention and I used that with success on the several times I've sub'd with that class. At the end of the day he told me how he, too, had to learn these techniques so I felt he intervened in a postive, supportive role; not in undermining me. I was a bit down, feeling like I didn't have the "touch" but I think he sensed that and helped me in a manner that did not put me down, etc. I know routine, attention, etc. are important skills for these little ones to learn but I cannot see how yelling accomplishes that. Some of them have so much going on in their home lives, etc. that they don't need it in school, too. Sounds like some of these folks the 2 of you had to deal with are just down and out control freaks...so sad. Best, Ken in WI
