Our district tried Pre-first which sounds like what you will be doing. It worked great except the class size was around 23-25 students. A class like this should remain at a low number, ideally around 15 students and allowed for extra help through the guidance office, Resource, and an assistant during the reading/language arts time. Let the parents know when their child enters wheather they will be allowed to be promoted to second grade or to first. That was the biggest mistake our district made. They intended for the students to be promoted to first grade, basically the students were repeating K but taken further since they had many of the basic skills. Policies should be written in advance to cover this area.
