beginning of the year assessment
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I spend most of September doing one on one assessment of my students in the following areas.

- letter names
- letter sounds
- number recognition to 20
- colour and number words

If I have readers (which in my area is not typical), I will test their sight word vocabulary. For the rest I usually do my first sight word test in November.

We also do a reading test which is primarily a phonics test for the most part but lets us know where the kids are and which areas I need to concentrate on with them.

I do a lot of informal observations as well - how are they with patterns, rhyming words, counting, overall speech patterns, printing and other fine-motor skills, etc.,
