gifts
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree that one should just accept the gifts in the spirit in which they are given. And I think we have all had our share of gifts that collect dust. I actually keep a lot of the gifts now at school and my new classes
each year like looking at them too.

I teach grade 1 and thankfully at that age they can't keep a secret so usually 3 or 4 days before the end of school and before Christmas they start announcing they have gifts. I always say to the class at that time, I always appreciate gifts because they are so nice to get, and I love all sorts of gifts from pictures they draw at home to something little

they might buy. And then I also state but I also don't really need gifts either because I think of them as my gifts for the year and that is more than enough for me. Then I let them know that they don't have to buy me anything, but if they really wanted to give me something they could make something at home or draw me a beautiful picture.

I still get a few bought gifts each year (Actually in my community gifts are somewhat rare as most of the families just don't think about giving gifts which is fine with me). And the children who can't afford or whose parents don't want to spend money on gifts can still make me a picture or another craft and feel proud of giving it to me.

Personally I love giving gifts, I have surprised different colleagues over the years because I'll give them a gift just because. And I think it's often very much the same for our students and their parents.
