hamburger By Beth

I teach my students with a "hamburger" poster, the top bun is the Topic Sentence, then the lettuce, tomato, and hamburger are three detail sentences, and the bottom bun is the concluding sentence. I also give them pre-writing organizers that have questions on them and are sort of "blueprints" for a paragraph. Example: Topic: If you had a ticket to anywhere where would you go? (answer is the main idea) 3 detail questions: 1. Who would you take? 2. How long would you stay? 3. What would you do there? Concluding sentence -I always tell them it has to wrap the paragraph up in a nice "bow" and restate | | the topic sentence in different words. My students seem to write good paragraphs in second grade with this type of structure. I don't expect them to write paragraphs on their own without one of these "blueprints" to work from. Some ofthem do it on their own, but many need the structure of the question sheets to pull those details out!
