changing routines By Julianne

In another life I went to basic training. Our drill instructor used to stop every so often and say, "Ok, NEW RULE..." This happened when something just wasn't working. He would make up a new rule for situations that hadn't| occurred before, or for old situations that were beginning to crumble. It definitely sounds like time for a new rule. You are right that your fifth graders are getting ready for sixth grade big time. You can use that fact to help them face the challenge of more mature behavior. You could impose a different routine on them - have them bring everything they'll need into the classroom |
| before the start of class - or you could hold a class meeting and discuss the problem you see and have the students work out a solution. They also need to determine a consequence if things don't improve. It's best, of course, if the students come up with their own solution. But if that's not going to work for you, just make a new rule about locker visits and stick with it until the end of the year - which, BTW, is not too far off (thank heaven!)
