ar

Debbie,

I was sorry to hear such negatives about AR. I have used it in every school that I have taught in. I don't think Tamara is using it as the sole grade for her class, but more to encourage independent reading.

Last
year we decided to set goals for each ability group to achieve each marking period. There was a sliding scale to determine a reading grade to be averaged into the whole reading grade. I was amazed to see how many kids really got into it after they realized that if they didn't read it could drop their reading grade by the whole letter. There was also a school goal and that helped
encourage the students to compete. If used properly this can be a great supplement to the classroom environment.

I agree that some of the questions are basic, but the whole premise is to get students to read. Of course there will be novels read with the whole class and then the more indepth conversations and questions can be addressed. I do also agree that the levels they use are not consistent with other sources, but for the most part I wouldn't be without the program.

How is AR used in your school? Is it as a supplement?
