everyday math By Tamara

I am new to a district that uses everyday math and I am very overwhelmed by it. They say that it is a "spiral approach" where they are introduced to a concept, practice and may understand it somewhat, but then you go on to the next concept and two chapters late htat first concept comes up again. In talking to other teachers in other grades, what they learn in first is used in upper grades, but some of these things are not taught in other programs so if a kid moves into the distrcit without everyday background he/she will be lost, I think. Anyone seeing major benefits? Again, this is my first year with it and am teaching first grade.
