Legend of the Indian Paintbrush
By Brenda

Clip to ScrapBook
Included here will be several activities I prepared to accompany the story.

1. The teacher reads the story onto a cassett tape. Children listen to the story individually or in small groups and follow along with the book.
During listening time small baggies with small stones, soft leather or suede, and small twigs are available to hold onto and examine. The flip side of the tape has recorded native American music to be used in another activity.

2. Teacher, prepare 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper by drawing as large a circle as possible. Draw one radius line. These lines will be cut at a later time. The

music side of the tape can be listened to at this time.
Student, using one prepared 8 1/2 x 11 inch white paper, completely paint with water. Then paint again with watercolor paints so the colors will bleed together. Set this paper aside until dry.

3. Teacher, prepare two shape choices from a soft suede or leather like fabric, use a file folder weight paper as a second layer and holding the two together punch holes around the outside edge. Shape choices should be a teepee or a buffalo. Supply colorful yarn for the student to use while sewing a fabric and paper shape together.

4. Teacher, on a new file folder draw the United States, have each state colored differently so students can find certain states. Supply two items for the student to stick onto the proper place. 1--a small sticky Indian Paintbrush flower picture, to be placed on the state where the story takes place 2--a small sticky "X marks the spot" where the student is now(home state).

5. Teacher, provide colored beads so the student can string beads in a pleasing pattern in order to make a necklace.

6. Teacher, prepare a new file folder with black and white paint brushes drawn on. These are labeled with "color" words: red, orange, blue, yellow, purple, etc. Make separate paintbrushes, color them and laminate them individually. Students will match the colored paintbrush to the correct color word on the file folder.

7. Student, use your dry painting from earlier activity, cut out the circle drawn on the other side and cut the radius line. Now fold this paper into a cone shape, overlap the cut edges and neatly staple. You now have made a teepee.

Email me if you have comments or questions. Hope this sparks more ideas. A nice summer project!!!
