word confusion
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
One way of avoiding the confusion is to teach the "wh" blend. Words like "where", "when", "white", and "what" are all sight words first graders can learn and use in their reading and writing. When they're trained to listen for and produce the "h" sound in these words they'll be more likely to write the correct word.

One tip I got from my Reading Recovery colleague is to NOT teach two easily confused words together. Apparently it just connects the two words more firmly together in the child's mind and makes it more difficult for them to remember what makes them different. I used to teach words like to, two and too together. But I'm having more luck with the RR suggestion.
