Clip to ScrapBook
Here are some that I think of as typical 4th grade books:

Mary on Horseback by Rosemary Wells
Amber Brown series by Paula Danzinger
Skinnybones by Barbara Park
The Graduation of Jake Moon by Barbara Park
The
Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman
Starring Grace by Mary Hoffman (short novel sequel to Amazing Grace)

The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
The BFG by Roald Dahl
Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

Honus and Me
Jackie and Me
Babe and Me
Shoeless Joe and Me
all by Dan Gutman -- boy travels through time with

baseball cards to meet baseball greats -- I have good success with these and reluctant reading boys who can read on grade level but just do not want to

Just Juice by Karen Hesse
Love you, Soldier by Amy Hest
Love that Dog by Sharon Creech
My Louisiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt
Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer -- Higher level
The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden

Shiloh
Shiloh Season
Saving Shiloh
all by Phyllis Naylor

Hank the Cowdog series by John Erickson

Sammy Keyes Mysteries by Wendy Van Drannen
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Ella Enchanted
The Princess Test
Cinderellis and the Glass Hill
Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep
The Fairy's Mistake
all by Gail Carson Levine

Finding Buck McHenry by Alfred Slote -- another good title for sports loving boys

From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by Konigsburg

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Cohen

Under the Blood-Red Sun by Graham Salisbury

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town by Kimberly Willis Holt

Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary -- and sequel Strider
The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Cleary -- and sequels

Mr. Popper's Penquins by the Atwaters

Some struggling readers might like the Time Warp Trio series.

My third grade daughter is now devouring a series by Bret Hale starring Chet Gecko -- they are a mystery series with titles like
The Chamelion Wore Chartruese
Farewell, My Lunchbag
and others titles that are take-offs from classic mysteries. I haven't had a chance to read one, yet, but I would guess that they look to be about 4th or 5th grade level reading. Rachel likes to read, but she loses interest in a book easily and generally has two or three going at once so that when she gets bored she moves to another and then comes back to the one she got bored with later. These books have held her attention though and she has now read three of them straight through. I can't wait to have a minute to read through one. Anyway, they might be worth looking into for a mystery unit or just pleasure reading.

Good luck in your new grade level and hope you get lots of good ideas.

Lori
