Mathematics By Debbie

Hi all, While I agree with some of your suggestions and I know they came from your state standards, I'd suggest you check with NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and use their principles and standards for| a more accurate picture. Some of the standards the states have adopted just aren't cognitively appropriate for ALL first graders should know them by the end of the year...I am specifically referring to the memorization of facts as well as time. While the children should be exposed to these (thru meaningful and real problem solving situations) and yes, you can get them to memorize them, |
| usually this is without the meaning behind them. Also see Piaget and Kamaii's (Theorists in the field of Child Development and Mathematics) work for possibilities. Take care! ;-D
