Iowa too!
By Kara

Clip to ScrapBook
I am from Iowa and there have been many budget cuts here as well. To make matters worse, I am from a rural area where there are absolutely NO openings. The teachers who are retiring or quitting are not being replaced -
they are "sucking up" their positions with current faculty. Another big scare in rural Iowa is the fact that school districts are dropping dramatically in enrollment and we are being forced to pursue sharing/consolidation with other neighboring districts. My fear is that my children (3 yrs & 4 mos) will end up being bussed over 30 miles one way to get to school. I wish there was something
we could do to make the legislators understand how important education is and to increase the budget for education rather than cut it all the time! I am looking into substitute teaching for a while until something more permanent becomes available. Subbing is a great way to get to know a district and for the district to get to know you. And the pay isn't too bad, either. Of course you don't get any benefits, but it is certainly an option of how to stay in the education field while earning some sort of an income.
