I think that's a great idea, esp with older students. But I think 15 min is being over-generous to them! I would cut back the time some, or maybe have smaller consequences each time the tally reaches a 5 min mark, like losing the privilege of working with a partner, computer time, talking while working, or maybe even have them look up the word "silence" in the dictionary & write it out with an apology for showing disrespect toward their classmates & a gues in their room (the sub!).
