Ultimately you must decide would the child really benefit being kept back another year? If your answer is a yes then retention is the right thing to do but otherwise send them on. Factors I used to determine if a child should be retained in K is: 1. maturity level, 2. strengths and weeknesses of the child, 3. Abiltity to handle a focused and structured approach to learning, first grade is very structured., and 4. Benefits the child would gain being retained.
